Diary of the shortest flight in my life.

After the 28 hour bus ride from Bolivia to Paraguay that felt more like hell I was not looking forward to my next bus ride. My next bus ride was from Santa Cruz to Sucre. They say it is only a 12 hour bus ride, but can take up to 18 hours or longer depending on the conditions of the road. A 12 hour bus ride is honestly a piece of cake, but I just didn’t want to deal with being on a bus for a long time and taking a chance on it being longer.

My friend Norbert from Globotreks mentioned that you could fly throughout Bolivia cheap. I try to avoid flying because most times it’s not cheap, but thought why not check flights out. So I got online and started looking at flights. Come to find out a flight between the two cities was a bit over $40. So I thought long and hard about it… okay no I really didn’t think about it at all. I didn’t even care how much cheaper the bus was. I went straight to a tour agency and booked my flight.

The craziest thing of all was not that it was a short 30 minute flight, but that I found out that the airport I was flying out of was walking distance from my hostel. I couldn’t believe it. I am in the middle of the city and I am going to be able to walk to an airport. I have never in my life walked to the airport and thought okay this is going to be interesting so I need to document it. I keep track of my thought on long 24+ hour bus rides why not the shortest flight I will probably ever take? So here it is… all my thoughts:

8:32am – Woke up bright and early to catch my flight to Sucre. Had a great free breakfast, scrambled eggs with toast and lots of fruit. Crazy I paid $7.50 per night in the dorm and it includes free breakfast. I then checked everything I needed to check online and am now leaving the hostel to walk to the airport. Yeah fucking crazy that I’m walking to an airport. I’ve never done that in my life and am sure I will never be able to do it again.

8:45am – Bajajajaja less than 15 minutes later we arrive at the airport. It’s literally in the middle of the city & tiny.

9:03am – We are done checking in and paying the airport tax. I say we because a German guy from the hostel is also taking this same flight.

Flight from Santa Cruz to Sucre.

9:05am – We are asked to wait. We can’t board yet. I then realize they only have two gates here. So I decide to edit photos for Instagram while I wait.

9:30am – We are allowed to go to the boarding area & need to go through security.

9:38am – I’ve passed security but was the only want sent aside for extra checking. The lady saw my Mexican passport, asked if I was Mexican I said, “yes” and she sent me to a cop. He asked if I was Mexican I said, yes and then asked what is the purpose of my visit. I said, “tourism”.

“Where are you going?”
“Sucre.”
“And what are you doing there?”
“Visiting the town and maybe doing a 3 day hike around town.”
“Okay give me a minute.”

He opens my bag and goes through it all and then literally feels every inch of the bag then says, “okay carry on”. Ahhh Mexico and drugs… of course they are gonna check me a bit more, because I’m in land of Cocaine.

Flight from Santa Cruz to Sucre.

9:44am – I’m now on the airplane ready for take off. I took photos of the plane. It’s so tiny but yeah I’ve been on tinier ones in the Philippines. I seriously though can’t believe how short this flight is going to be. I mean they say 35 minutes. Like we are just gonna go up and then back down? Omg this is actually scary. Let’s see how this goes.

9:49am – OMG THE PLANE IS MOVING. Wow that was so fast. Take off is soon.

9:52am – OMG we have taken off and are in the air. Fuckin bad ass. Was meant to take off at 10am but this is Bolivia and things just go however. Okay hope we arrive safe.

9:56am – Wow, they are passing out juice and little snack boxes. Fucking love it. This is way more than the peanuts you get when flying short flights in the US. Ah and I love that I only paid $42 for this flight.

Flight from Santa Cruz to Sucre.

10:01am – You know I still have no fucking clue how airplanes work. Like I have flown a million times, but like yeah how does it happen? It’s a huge fucking metal object just flying in the air over the fucking clouds. Every time I look out the window and am over clouds I think, “fucking shit I’m over the clouds like above the clouds and just floating through the air”, and never understand how. Like I mean I know how it happens, but how does it happen… lol? It’s like magic or something. I like flying but don’t love it. Everytime I fly I feel like I’m at a higher risk of dying when in reality it’s a lot more dangerous down there on earth. You’re more likely to die in a car accident then plane crash. I don’t even know why I’m writing all this. I guess even on short transportation days my mind runs a million miles per hour.

10:11am – Confession I have Kelly Clarkson”s song Tightrope on repeat. I fucking love this song so much and think it’s one of her best. This is probably my all time favorite. Okay, no I lie Maybe will always be her best song and the best song in the world. I just love the lyrics to Tightrope so much. They hit home in my situation.

“And maybe you and I will fall in time
eventually
maybe we will both die trying
but I can’t make my self to leave.
‘Cause I’ve looked
and I ain’t seen nothing like you
the way you light up every room tonight
so easily”

OMG wait today is April 24. OMG it’s her Birthday!!! Bajajajajaja I never forget cus it’s exactly 2 months after mine. Awwwww Happy Birthday Kelly!!! I so wish she would read my blog one day. I love her so much.

Flight from Santa Cruz to Sucre.

10:15am – OMG THE MOUNTAINS & THE CITY!!!

10:20am – Wow, we have landed. That was less than 30 minutes. It was actually a 28 minute flight. I’m laughing because that’s fucking crazy. It has to be a record of some sort right?

It was a smooth short 28 minute flight. Still can’t believe how short it was. We arrived grabbed a cab and went straight to our hostel since we were staying at the same hostel in Sucre too. So there you have it… my thoughts on the shortest flight I will probably ever take. I swear I don’t understand how even on a short flight my mind can be a mess. It wasn’t that bad though. Oh & what is fucking sad is that as I write this no joke I have Kelly Clarkson’s Tightrope on repeat on my laptop. Seriously if you haven’t heard it just do. It’s just so fucking beautiful. Oh the lyrics they slay me. So I want to know though is… what is the shortest flight you have ever taken?

I think my shortest flight was from the island of Caye Caulker in Belize to Belize City Municipal airport. It was way shorter than 30 minutes. Don’t remember exactly how long. And I walked to that airport, too! No security there since it was internal in Belize. Definitely a great experience
