Ruins of Hampi in photos.

“IN PHOTOS” is a series I will use to share many of the hundreds of photos I have taken during my travels. It is a series I have thought about for a while now, but did not want to start until I got back home from my trip. However after spending a week in Chefchaouen, Morocco I couldn’t wait any longer. “IN PHOTOS” will not have a set schedule like my “MUSIC MONDAY” or “PHOTO ROUND UP” series. “IN PHOTOS” will be a post with several photos with no limit. The only restriction this series will have is that it must be about a certain subject or theme. I will write a brief paragraph or sentence describing the subject or theme of the photos and then post the photos. I will not caption the photos like I do on my “PHOTO ROUND UP” with my thoughts. I want to use “IN PHOTOS” to share my photos and let you come up with your own thoughts about the images and hope you share them with me.

I almost didn’t make it to Hampi. You see right after one of the most amazing experiences of my life exploring the backwaters of Kerala by houseboat we were thrown right back into reality. Yes I experienced one of the worst transportation days of my life. I mean seriously I cried several times and even thought I was going to die. It’s a transportation day I don’t ever want to write about… it was that bad. During that day I had called it quits on India. I was already making plans to change my flight and leave India ASAP. Well I am glad that the next few days were much better and relaxing and in the ended decided to go to Hampi. I am glad I did because Hampi turned out to be one of my favorite towns in all of India.

Hampi is famous for the thousands of temples and ruins that are around it. I was intrigued by all the temples and ruins, but I was more intrigued by a different type of ruins. When we arrived we saw everything destroyed in ruins and all thought the same thing “What happened here?”. I thought it had to have been an earthquake to do damage like this, but Dani thought it had to have been done by hand. We kept wondering until we finally asked. Come to find out they were destroyed by hand… by the government. Apparently with the growth in tourism tons of guesthouses, restaurants and shops were built all around the temples. At that time they had no clue the damage that building all this would do to the foundation of the temples and that the pollution from the rick-shaws would do to the stone of the temples. The government decided to make sure everyone around the temples would leave for good, by destroying it all and make it uninhabitable.

I took so many photos of all the destroyed things and thought I would share my favorite. I know I could instead share photos of the amazing temples I saw, but I find this more interesting. Plus I have shared like a million photos of ruins and temples, but not many of a destroyed village. It’s really sad that this was already destroyed when I arrived. Hampi is really a beautiful town with some of the nicest people ever. Even with all this it didn’t make me like Hampi less I would have loved to see it with all these cute colorful places fully built.

  1. Wow, I’m amazed that these places were destroyed by hand. I’d have sworn that it was due to an earthquake, too. Love the colours of the photographs, and especially love the last image with the lone chair sitting in the barber shop.

I know right… I thought the same thing. I couldn’t believe it. I loved the colors too and the last photograph is my favorite.

  2. Gorgeous photos! I love the colours of the buildings and it’s like a ghost town with all the signs still up, crazy… I wonder what it looked like before it was destroyed… *goes off to google it*

Thanks Lauren, in a way it is a ghost town because the people are only on the edges of town now. So when you walk through the main parts of it no one is around. Oh I haven’t even checked to see what it looked like before, Ill have to do it when I have more time.

  3. That’s really different ruins I expected to see in pictures 🙂

p.s. it is very interesting what did happen on that transportation day? A month ago I was in Kerala and didn’t experienced anything different from the rest of India.

Yeah Vi I could have posted of the actual ruins of Hampi which are amazing, but thought these would be more interesting to share. Oh as for that day I’ll say this much… I thought I was going to die and I cried about 3 times. It was hell!!!

  4. I can’t believe the government did that. How horrible…

  5. It’s awful that the town is being destroyed, but I guess it’s good that they’re trying to save the temples. It’s a shame they couldn’t have come up with a better solution though. Great pictures!

I know it really is awful, but for a good reason. I wish they could have come up with a better solution. It would be interesting to see what it looks like a few years from now. I would hope they remove it all and make it into a park or something. The town is beautiful and shouldn’t be left looking like that.

  6. Fantastic photos! And I bet this place was less hectic than India as well!
