Travel Photo Roulette Round #52: FACE

EEEEeeeee I finally won Photo Roulete!!! Y’all know I love taking photos and sharing them and is why I have my “IN PHOTOS” & “PHOTO ROUND UP” series. It’s also why I can’t wait to buy a DSLR when I get home and try to improve my photography. This is one of the few chain events that I love around the travel blogging community. I just think it’s such a unique way for us to dig into our photo collection and share a photo of whatever the category may be. Travel Photo Roulette was started in November 2010 by Jeremy from LivingTheDream as a way for travel bloggers to showcase their best photography. For each round a new theme is chosen, and independent travel bloggers are asked to submit their photos. Then a winner is chosen to host (and judge!) the following round.

The last round (#51) was “FRIENDSHIP” hosted by Life’s Little Victories. My photo of 4 children in Elephantine Island goofing around was chosen as the winner and well now it’s my turn to host. I wasn’t sure what to pick as the theme… didn’t know if I should be silly and pick a naughty theme or keep it serious. Well I am keeping it serious and I am happy to announce the theme for Round #52 of Travel Photo Roulette:

FACE

I’ve mentioned on several occasions that I have never been good at photographing peoples face. It’s something I wish I was good at because I am always intrigued by faces. The eyes… the wrinkles… the nose… the smile… the look… the hair… the skin… it  always makes me wonder “what is their story?”. If you think about it I think the whole world is intrigued in peoples face. FACE is even in the name of the biggest website in the world FACEBOOK. I’ve been on the road almost 2 years and I have only been able to capture a handful of good photos of peoples face (most of them in India) and am curious to see your best.

Some examples:

Faces of India

—This was taken during the Holi Festival in Mathura, India. —

Faces of India

—This was taken while exploring the Ruins of Hampi, India.

Faces of India

—This was taken during my experience volunteering in India with the students of Sambahli-Trust.—

The Contest will run from December 15th to December 22nd, 2012.

For those new to the process, Travel Photo Roulette is a rotating event open to bloggers and photographers and people generally interested in good work. See the rules below

Contest Overview

The contest rotates through travel and/or photography blogs as such, the winner of the previous round of Travel Photo Roulette hosts the subsequent round on their own blog. The new host then chooses the next theme, a generic keyword or phrase and players submit their interpretations of the theme over course of the week of the contest.

At the end of the week, the hosting blogger chooses their favorite photo from the submissions and displays it as the week’s winning entry. They then include direction to the new host for the next round. Readers can attempt to lobby the author toward a certain photo via comments – the author can accept or ignore any lobby as they see fit. The game is repeated with the winner hosting the following week’s game and choosing a phrase for new photo submissions.

Guidelines

  • One submission per Blog (so sites that have 2+ authors only get one entry).
  • Post processing is permitted, but photo altering (ie. photoshopping) is not.
  • Abstract submissions welcomed as long as it fits within the interpretation of the chosen phrase. Remember, the hosting blogger chooses the winner, so if they cannot understand the submission, you might not win!
  • Please try and keep your images medium-sized and web-optimized (around 600px).
  • If you win, keep these in mind when choosing a new theme: * Keep phrases general so that all bloggers can participate. Specific items like “Eiffel Tower” should be avoided but rather made open-ended like “monuments.” For variety, it is okay to say focused things such as “monuments at night” which most of us have pictures of. Phrases can be generic ‘signs’, or abstract  ‘religion’. *Abstract thoughts are appreciated, but keep it within the realm that all readers will understand. No “Kafka-esque”, or “Overlooking Creation”. Use something that is able to be interpreted by all.
  • After 1 year, phrases can be reused, however new photos must be submitted.
  • No obscene pictures or phrases allowed. Suggestive phrases and photography can be accepted, but please keep it within reason.
  • Keep the ideas and photos fresh!
  • Pictures from your entire portfolio are fair to submit. You do not have to take the photo within the week of the contest period to submit it.
  • Most importantly, ALL PHOTOS MUST BE YOUR OWN.
  • One last rule, since this is a competition for bloggers, we need you to be a blogger to be declared a winner. Sorry!

How to submit your photos

To enter in the Photo Roulette competition simply leave a comment below with a link to the image (whether Flickr, Picasa or your own site) and we will upload it to this post. Don’t forget to provide a brief description or caption for the photo so the viewers can get a little background as to what’s happening.

Check back here throughout the week to see all the entries as they come in and feel free to comment on them. The contest runs for 7 days from today, with the submission date being December 15th to December 22nd, 2012 (Saturday thru Saturday). The winner will be announced in a few days after the deadline, and they will host round #53.

I managed to capture a very interesting face during my trip to Istanbul, and the owner of this face was very happy to pose for me….

Entry #2:

Peg – A Kit & A Camera

Travel Photo Roulette

This was taken on a beach in Rio das Ostras, Brazil. A little boy seeing a live puffer fish for the first time.

Entry #3

Giulia – Travel Reportage

Travel Photo Roulette

My submission is probably not what one would expect… This is one of the Ain Ghazal statues, that are believed to be the first statues ever made in history.  Some of them are dated back to 10,000 years ago. I found this one in Amman, in the citadel’s museum, and found it very interesting looking… nice or creepy?

Entry #4

Daniel – Globe Trekking

Travel Photo Roulette

I don’t take many portrait photos, but my entry is probably one of my favorites….

Entry #5

Jason – Global Walkabout

Travel Photo Roulette

Took this picture outside of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. The Baboon was in the process of being cleaned and I am pretty sure was seeking my approval but not entirely sure.

Entry #6

Ellen – The Time-Crunched Traveler

Travel Photo Roulette

“I captured this image of a little girl in Kampala, Uganda while I was volunteering at an orphanage there in May 2009. She was surrounded by such poverty, pain, and suffering, but yet she was so full of life. I love this image because I feel her sense of enduring hope and zeal for life is communicated through the expression in her eyes.”

Entry #7

David & Veronica – The GypsyNester

Travel Photo Roulette

In the Colonial Center of Quito, Ecuador, this lady was sweet enough to let us snap her photo – and sent us along with a blessing.

Entry #8

Ash – The Most Alive

Travel Photo Roulette

This shot of a Royal Bedouin Police Officer in ceremonial uniform was taken in Petra, Jordan.

Travel Photo Roulette

Taken during a friendly (and giant) game of chess in a park in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina. This man was in the middle of figuring out his next move.

I am also really shy about taking photos of strangers, but this little girl in Cambodia was really eager to have her photo taken.

Entry #13

Dani – Globetrotter Girls

My entry is one of the many creepy faces that you find in front of the White Temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

Entry #14

James – Fly, Icarus, Fly

The portrait is of a Himba boy in northern Namibia. The Himbas are semi-nomadic and live close to the earth. We spent an unexpected night here when our overlanding truck became inextricably mired in mud, but it made for some wonderful interactions!

Entry #15

Travis – Flashpacker HQ

This cute little girl was on the steps of Doi Suthep as I was coming down after an early morning of shooting images around the temple in Chiang Mai. I couldn’t help but take a few images.

Entry #16

Leif – The Runaway Guide

Egyptian Boy

In the midst of the Egyptian revolution, just minutes away from an intense tear gas battle, a little boy stares nonchalantly at a lanky travel blogger taking his picture

Entry #17

Adam – Getting Stamped

Balie Monkey

The life of a monkey in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. This little guy took a break from lounging atop his statue to pose for our picture.

Entry #19

Priyank – Final Transit

Travel Photo Roulette

Rolling couscous balls with the womenfolk in Cappadocia, Turkey!

Entry #20

Kathryn – Travel with Kat

Bedouin-girl

I photographed this girl last month in the Sinai Desert, Egypt. It was just before I climbed onto the back of a camel to ride through the desert to a Bedouin camp. Now I am home, I wonder how old she is and what is her story?

Travel Photo Roulette.

He owns a guest house in Gili Trawangan and was very helpful to guide me to the best places in Indonesia and give interesting insight to Indonesian society and effects of tourism.

  1. I must admit that I usually don’t go to people and ask them if I can take a close up of their face (unless they are children!), as I would absolutely hate it if a stranger did that to me. Having said that, I did manage to capture a very interesting face during my trip to Istanbul, and the owner of this face was very happy to pose for me….

I so understand you Denise, because I am the same way. I always have to ask 1st and even then I sometimes feel uncomfortable. The photo you submitted is so funny. I love your take on FACE and love street art and love that it’s from Istanbul (my fav city in the world). Thanks for the submission.

  7. I love this idea! Faces have been hard for me on this trip as well, partly because I’m nervous to ask permission to take the photos – silly me!

This is a Mayan woman from Guatemala. This photo was taken to help the organization write fundraising letters; she had came limping into the organization I was volunteering with to ask for financial aid for a knee surgery.

Women in Guatemala, like in most places in the world, do a majority of the farming, selling in the markets and taking care of children. Unfortunately their husbands are not supportive in the field or financially, as the money is often spent on alcohol or themselves (not even the children). Without the financial help, she would never get the surgery. Unfortunately, I don’t know if the money was ever raised. Her face has stuck with me throughout this journey as a reminder of the plight of women around the world and as motivation to work toward improving their situations.

I remember traveling through Guatemala and wanting to photograph so many beautiful faces, but couldn’t.I know her story is so similar to so many women across Latin America and it breaks my heart. I hope she was able to get the surgery.

  25. My favorites are #13 and #15.

#13 is super funny, like it a lot. And the tiny one on #15 is just sooooo cute.

  26. That cute girl hanging out at the bottom of the steps at Doi Suthep. Her Mother dresses her up in a Lisu costume. You can only take her picture after you give her money. How much money did you pay for this? You didn’t think about why she wasn’t in school? No she is not part of the Lisu truibe. Please stop paying people for staged photos, it gives the profession a bad name.
