10 days in NYC in Black & White.

Better late than never right? Yeah well I went to New York City way back in June of last year. I wanted to go to TBEX (a travel blog conference) in Toronto and well after finding out that Toronto is a short one hour flight to NYC I told my self “Umm yeah I am going back to NYC finally.” so yup I sure did. I visited Toronto for 5 days and after that spent 10 amazing days in NYC. This was the second time I had visited New York City and it was just different. The first time I had visited it was one of my first vacations I took back in 2009 and had a list with me of all the major sites I had to see. This time I had just got back from backpacking around the world for 2 years and had a different view of the world and I also had no list with things to tick off. I just wanted to enjoy my 10 days in NYC exploring more of it by visiting a different neighborhood each day. So I did just that.

I know it’s very cliche to say I LOVE NY, but that’s the truth I really love NY. It’s a place where the world collides and you seriously have things available to you from just about every country in the world. Just walking down the street from my friends apartment in Queens I would come across many types of restaurants like Egyptian, Brazilian, Greek, Italian and just many more. At every corner you see the amazing diversity that lives peacefully next to one another. The other thing that I love about NYC is the concrete jungle that is NYC. It’s a million buildings skyrocketing into the sky and somehow in the mist of it all you have a park here and there or beautiful trees lining up the streets making it not feel so concrete and the fact that you don’t need a car to get around. That’s right you can get just about anywhere in the city via public transportation. During my 10 days there not once did I need a car or even need to hire a cab. It’s something shocks me and so wish I could say was possible in Houston, TX.

I spent most of my time walking around and the reason I did that is because I had just bought my first DSLR and I wanted to practice with it. To be honest I’ve had it now for about 8 months and I still have no clue how to use it. I have been very lazy and have not tried. I know though that once I am back on the road I will practice a lot more and hopefully get the hang of how to use it. This however is my first post using photos I took with my DSLR. I know they may not be the greatest, but I figured I should share my favorite photos. I also made them Black & White, because for some reason when I think of NYC I always think of it in black & white. I feel like the city is just made to be shown in black & white to capture some of it’s smaller details. Here some of the photos I took:

One of my best friends and who I stayed with for 10 days in NYC. She too has a soul of a gypsy and can’t ever stay in one place for long. She spent 2 years living in NYC & is now spending a year living in Turkey before setting off on another adventure. She shares her adventures via Instagram. You can follow her at @LisaHartwig

When I saw this I had a moment of Deja-Vu. Reminded me of a scene I would see in major cities across Southeast Asia. Trash pickers looking for anything that can be recycled and they can make some money from.

Something that shocked me was the amount of PDA from gay couples all over NYC. I felt like wow we are moving ahead in some places in our country. Here are two men kissing at the Subway station before saying bye to each other.

One of the highlights of my time in NYC was a meeting I had at the 30 Rockefellar Plaza with NBCLatino.  I was interviewed and my top 10 destinations were featured on their site.

The beautiful couple behind Globetrotter Girls. Our paths first crossed way back the start of my trip around the world in Costa Rica. Since then we’ve met there, Panama, India and now the USA. We have become best friends and know our paths will cross once again somewhere in this crazy world.

No matter the time of day or weather you will always see a long line at the famous Halal Guys. For less than $6 you get an amazing huge plate of delicious Middle Eastern food.

I loved seeing this spray painted on the sidewalks of NYC. Wish their was more awareness of what Israel is doing to Palestine. It’s GENOCIDE yet no one says anything.

After visiting NYC for the second time and spending 10 days there I was reminded why it still is one of my favorite cities in the world and one I would love to live in one day. A part of keeps telling myself “when I’m done traveling the world just come back to the USA and make NYC home”. I may just do that, but who knows… because for now I want to see more of the world.

  1. These are fantastic shots! I think once you fall in love with a place it will always have a piece of your heart, like all great loves. I had barely a year in NYC and there are days when I feel homesick… for a place I briefly called home.
