Music Monday – Same Love

Anyone who meets me knows I love music. I love all types… ummm okay I love most types of music. For me its about the lyrics and what it is the artist is talking about or what message they are trying to convey. I love to dissect a song and its lyrics completely. Every Monday I want to post a song that either inspires me, makes me think about the world we live in, motivates me to always be who I am or may be something I was feeling at some point. It will be a great mix of different types of music and hope it will also do the same for you. I love to think that music captures what so many of us may be feeling or want to say, but don’t know how.

SONG – Same Love

ARTIST – Macklemore X Ryan Lewis ft. Mary Lambert

LYRICS –

[Piano Intro]

[Verse 1: Macklemore]
When I was in the 3rd grade
I thought that I was gay
Cause I could draw, my uncle was
And I kept my room straight
I told my mom, tears rushing down my face
She’s like, “Ben you’ve loved girls since before pre-K”
Trippin’, yeah, I guess she had a point, didn’t she
A bunch of stereotypes all in my head
I remember doing the math like
“Yeah, I’m good at little league”
A pre-conceived idea of what it all meant
For those who like the same sex had the characteristics
The right-wing conservatives think its a decision
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion
Man-made, rewiring of a predisposition
Playing God
Ahh nah, here we go
America the brave
Still fears what we don’t know
And God loves all His children
Is somehow forgotten
But we paraphrase a book written
35 hundred years ago
I don’t know

[Hook: Mary Lambert]
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm [x4]

[Verse 2: Macklemore]
If I was gay
I would think hip-hop hates me
Have you read the YouTube comments lately
“Man that’s gay”
Gets dropped on the daily
We’ve become so numb to what we’re sayin’
Our culture founded from oppression
Yeah, we don’t have acceptance for ’em
Call each other faggots
Behind the keys of a message board
A word routed in hate
Yet our genre still ignores it
Gay is synonymous with the lesser
It’s the same hate that’s caused wars from religion
Gender and skin color
Complexion of your pigment
The same fight that lead people to walk-outs and sit-ins
It’s human rights for everybody
There is no difference
Live on! And be yourself!
When I was in church
They taught me something else
If you preach hate at the service
Those words aren’t anointed
And that Holy Water
That you soak in
Is then poisoned
When everyone else
Is more comfortable
Remaining voiceless
Rather than fighting for humans
That have had their rights stolen
I might not be the same
But that’s not important
No freedom ’til we’re equal
Damn right I support it
I don’t know

[Hook: Mary Lambert]
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm [x4]

[Verse 3: Macklemore]
We press play
Don’t press pause
Progress, march on!
With a veil over our eyes
We turn our back on the cause
‘Till the day
That my uncles can be united by law
Kids are walkin’ around the hallway
Plagued by pain in their heart
A world so hateful
Someone would rather die
Than be who they are
And a certificate on paper
Isn’t gonna solve it all
But it’s a damn good place to startXX
No law’s gonna change us
We have to change us
Whatever god you believe in
We come from the same one
Strip away the fear
Underneath it’s all the same love
About time that we raised up

[Hook: Mary Lambert]
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm [x4]

[Outro: Mary Lambert]
Love is patient, love is kind
Love is patient (not cryin’ on Sundays)
Love is kind (not crying on Sundays) [x5]

LISTEN TO IT HERE – Same Love by Macklemore X Ryan Lewis ft. Mary Lambert

WHY I PICKED IT – I know surprise… finally a song that is not about my broken heart…lol!!! I had never heard this song before and now can’t stop playing it. One of my best friends in the world sent me the video and asked me to watch it and then let me know I would cry. I played it and cried… okay no I didn’t cry… I BAWLED. This is why I love music, it can sometimes convey a message so powerful it will trigger every emotion in your body and break you into tears. Please read the lyrics… please listen to the song… it’s beautiful and so damn true. I don’t think I need to say more, because the song says it all. It says everything I feel about my rights “NO FREEDOM ‘TIL WE’RE EQUAL” … “BUT WE PARAPHRASE A BOOK WRITTEN 35 HUNDRED YEARS AGO”. It’s sad waking up every morning knowing you are a 2nd class citizen in the country you were born in. I know that may sound dramatic, but it’s the truth and it hurts. I can go on with how I feel and share the million things that cross my mind when I think about my not having the same rights, but won’t. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this song.

  1. Good choice!

This is an especially big deal for us right now as we are about to have Marriage Equality voted on in Washington State.

Thanks Kent, my friend mentioned that to me. I felt horrible, because I honestly had no clue that was going on at home for y’all in Washington. It’s a tough fight, but it’s one of the few fights on earth actually worth fighting for. I wish y’all and everybody from Washington the best.

  2. Wow. Pretty powerful stuff. Thanks for sharing this with me Jaime.
My favourite line is: ‘Even if I wanted to’.
Though it wasn’t always the case, I would never change who I am. I feel very privileged in a unique way and am proud to be apart of one of the biggest civil rights movement of our generation.
In time my friend, in time.

Thanks Brock, yes it’s very powerful. Oh I love that line too & her voice is just hauntingly beautiful. I understand when you say though it wasn’t always the case… because I’ve been there too. I know for a fact I would never change who I am now and in a way yes it is a privilege to be apart of one of the biggest civil rights movements of our generation, but sadly feel it shouldn’t be this hard. In time… in time.

  3. Thanks for sharing this! I’ve heard the song a few times in the past week and Macklemore has been all over the internets recently – great to see it all over!

Definitely cried during the video myself, and the lyrics are just great. It’s not your typical LGBT/equality activist video which makes it that more special!

So glad you had heard of it Adam, I hadn’t and damn it just hit me hard. Glad this song is out there and people are hearing it, it’s awesome to hear a song like this from a straight mans point of view about what we are dealing with. It really isn’t your typical LGBT video.
