Music Monday – Fast Car

Anyone who meets me knows I love music. I love all types… ummm okay I love most types of music. For me its about the lyrics and what it is the artist is talking about or what message they are trying to convey. I love to dissect a song and its lyrics completely. Every Monday I want to post a song that either inspires me, makes me think about the world we live in, motivates me to always be who I am or may be something I was feeling at some point. It will be a great mix of different types of music and hope it will also do the same for you. I love to think that music captures what so many of us may be feeling or want to say, but don’t know how.

SONG – Fast Car

ARTIST – Tracy Chapman

LYRICS –

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere

Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we’ll make something
But me myself I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
We won’t have to drive too far
Just ‘cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living

You see my old man’s got a problem
He live with the bottle that’s the way it is
He says his body’s too old for working
I say his body’s too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody’s got to take care of him
So I quit school and that’s what I did

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
We leave tonight or live and die this way

I remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped ’round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
And we go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain’t got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You’ll find work and I’ll get promoted
We’ll move out of the shelter
Buy a big house and live in the suburbs
You got a fast car
And I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I’d always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans I ain’t going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way

LISTEN TO IT HEREFast Car, Tracy Chapman

WHY I PICKED IT – I had never heard of Tracy Chapman until she was introduced to me a few weeks ago by an English couple. They gave me a lot of new music that I had never heard of and for some reason I have fallen in love with this song. Okay well I know why I have fallen in love with this song listen to it, the beat, sound, voice and lyrics are amazing. I picked this song because to me it is about finding where you belong and doing what it takes to be happy. She talks about a few obstacles that she had to over come and that sometimes kept her down and unhappy. We all have obstacles to over come to be happy and it is up to us to make sure we do over come them and are happy. Sometimes we can not do it alone and need help from someone who has a fast car (someone who can see the bigger picture and help you get to where you need to be going).

Let me know your thoughts below, maybe to you it has a whole different meaning.

  7. Ok, you are NOT that young. I remember listening to Tracy when these songs first came out in the early 90s. She has an incredible voice and songs that transcend time

    • Oh Justin in the 90s I grew up watching NOVELAS and listening to TEJANO music. It wasnt until I got to High School that I start watching American TV & listen to main stream English music.
