Music Monday – The Long Way Around

Anyone who meets me knows I love music. I love all types… ummm okay I love most types of music. For me its about the lyrics and what it is the artist is talking about or what message they are trying to convey. I love to dissect a song and its lyrics completely. Every Maonday I want to post a song that either inspires me, makes me think about the world we live in, motivates me to always be who I am or may be something I was feeling at some point. It will be a great mix of different types of music and hope it will also do the same for you. I love to think that music captures what so many of us may be feeling or want to say, but don’t know how.

SONG – The Long Way Around

ARTIST – Dixie Chicks

LYRICS –

My friends from high school
Married their high school boyfriends
Moved into houses in the same ZIP codes
Where their parents live

But I, I could never follow
No I, I could never follow

I hit the highway in a pink RV with stars on the ceiling
Lived like a gypsy
Six strong hands on the steering wheel

I’ve been a long time gone now
Maybe someday, someday I’m gonna settle down
But I’ve always found my way somehow

By taking the long way
Taking the long way around
Taking the long way
Taking the long way around

I met the queen of whatever
Drank with the Irish and smoked with the hippies
Moved with the shakers
Wouldn’t kiss all the asses that they told me to

No I, I could never follow
No I, I could never follow

It’s been two long years now
Since the top of the world came crashing down
And I’m getting’ it back on the road now

But I’m taking the long way
Taking the long way around
I’m taking the long way
Taking the long way around
The long
The long way around

Well, I fought with a stranger and I met myself
I opened my mouth and I heard myself
It can get pretty lonely when you show yourself
Guess I could have made it easier on myself

But I, I could never follow
No I, I could never follow

Well, I never seem to do it like anybody else
Maybe someday, someday I’m gonna settle down
If you ever want to find me I can still be found

Taking the long way
Taking the long way around
Taking the long way
Taking the long way around

LISTEN TO IT HERE – The Long Way Around

WHY I PICKED IT – The last few days I’ve been able to catch up with a lot of my friends from home for hours. It was so nice to catch up with them again. That is one of the benefits when you settle down for a bit live in a city; you aren’t in a rush to see it all so you can spend days catching up with everyone at home. Well chatting with them was fun, but one question that came up every time from each of them “WHEN ARE YOU COMING HOME?”. I told them I wasn’t sure that and think in March or April of next year I will head home. The truth is once I get to SEA if ever that will be that last portion of this trip and I know… I will be taking THE LONG WAY AROUND… traveling slow and making my money last as long as possible. Anyway it reminded me of this song.

I picked this song because well one I love country music & two because Dixie Chicks are one of my all time favorite bands. I mean really they knew how to sing with so much emotions. This song is one of them that wraps up how I feel right now. While I was talking to them they let me know that not much has changed but also found out that some of them are moving out getting their own apartments and you know doing the normal thing. Oh & know their is NOTHING wrong with that, but know it’s not for me. I used to want that, but when I hit rock bottom a few years ago I realized it wasn’t what I wanted and felt this part of the song:

“Well, I fought with a stranger and I met myself
I opened my mouth and I heard myself
It can get pretty lonely when you show yourself
Guess I could have made it easier on myself”

I know they are referring to Pres. George W. Bush and what they said that ust showed how much “FREEDOM OF SPEACH” we have at home. If you don’t know what I’m talking about watch this trailer “SHUT UP & SING” it’s sad. Anyway so when I hit rock bottom is when I learned “I COULD NEVER FOLLOW” and wanted to live life on my terms…

“Well, I never seem to do it like anybody else
Maybe someday, someday I’m gonna settle down
If you ever want to find me I can still be found”

Even though I am not ready to settle down I can still be found… I’m not running away I am just loving the life I am living. This song just says it all that sometimes us who travel long term or don’t want to settle down feel. From the feeling of not settling down, to the feelings you get on the road, to what brought us here, to just taking the long way around. Give it a listen… let me know what you think.

Are you taking the long way around???

  1. I love it Jaime. I haven’t actually listened to the song yet, but the lyrics are great. It’s pretty obvious that she’s talking about the Bush thing from a few years back, but I love that she (they?) wrote it in a way that you can relate it to other situations. Take your time, travel for as long as you need to or as long as you can, whichever comes first.

Thanks Ali, it really is a relatable song to any who is just not ready to settle down. As for me yup I will take my time and make things last as long as I want them to. If that means I get a job somewhere to stay on the road than so be it. We’ll see what happens.

  2. I have been reading your adventures for some time now, but have never commented. (I’m just a silent reader!) But after reading this post, I had to comment to say hi!

It’s very, very strange, but I’d been searching youtube before catching up with your latest posts and listening to people’s covers of The Long Way Round as I LOVE this song, and also can relate to it. Anyway, I clicked on this post whilst singing The Long Way Round to myself and wondered what was going on when the lyrics appeared in front of me on the screen!!! Hahah!!! Very bizarre : )

I spent a year of travelling and arrived back in the UK in April. Hand on heart, I can say that it was the most amazing experience and the best year of my life so far. I’m getting itchy feet again and feeling the need to continue my travelling, but I need to finish studying which I dropped out of many years ago. At the moment, I’m fighting between the two, wondering how on earth I’m going to stay in the same place for the next 5+ years : (

    Soooo….

Please keep posting, and I’ll keep reading!

Hi Laura, thank you so much for reading my adventure and thank you for commenting. I love my silent readers a ton, but even more when they comment so I can interact with them. It is strange that you have been listening to this song and then I post it. This is one of my favorite songs by the Dixie Chicks even though I love so many of their songs. Awesome that you did a year of traveling. Sorry you are back home and at school. As long as that is something you wanna do I am happy for you. I never finished College it just wasn’t for me and I wasn’t happy doing it so I just never finished and don’t think I ever will. At least not any time soon. Right now I am happy traveling and know I will be doing this for the next few years if I can make it happen. Thanks again for reading & yes I will keep writing so you can keep reading. Hope to hear from ya more in the comments and if not know that I still appreciate it the same.
