The Death of the Money Belt???

I remember when I 1st started planning my huge 2 year trip around the world I wasn’t sure if I should buy a money belt or not. I honestly thought they were tacky, but in the end did. You know the saying “better safe than sorry”. It actually turned out to be useful on the road, but sadly only used it a handful of times (mostly at over land border crossings). I never used it unless I had to because it was just uncomfortable and would always slide down and end up near my thighs. Aside from that most of the time I would forget to put it on.  Now though their is two guys Nigel & Franklin  trying to revolutionize the underwear that I think would be the death of the money belt.

They are creating boxer-briefs (my favorite type of underwear… yes that is what I wear all the time) that have two pockets that are able to hold the small important things you travel with and need on you most of the time. They are creating the Adventure Underwear.

Adventure Underwear

They recently contacted me and asked me to write a review on their “Adventure Underwear”. They shipped me a few to give them a try so I did and actually as I write this review I am wearing them… just a small side note. Before I give my thoughts here is some information about the Adventure Underwear directly from them:

“At Adventure Underwear we create the most comfortable and practical solution to travel theft available, our premium merino wool underwear with hidden waterproof pockets that will keep your valuables safe anytime, anywhere.

The idea for Adventure Underwear came after a friend got her camera stolen from right next to her head while taking a 5 minute nap on Copacabana beach, from that point on we had to take turns guarding our valuables on the beach for fear of having our things stolen. I don’t want other travelers to have that same experience.

Travel should be a memorable opportunity because of all the fun and exciting things you did, not because you had your wallet stolen and walked around paranoid the entire time. “

Now a few thoughts of mine about the Adventure Underwear:

Adventure Underwear

THEY’RE CUTE:

No joke I am very picky with the underwear I buy. I want to make sure they are cute and that they will match with the majority of the outfits I will wear (yes I try my best to make sure my underwear matches my outfit). When I first got the email of them asking me to write a review I hadn’t even seen the product and already just hearing “Travel Underwear” I imagined you know what “Travel Clothes” look like, tacky khaki and just ugly. Once they sent me photos and then I received the underwear I thought wow these are cute. I mean no really they are… look at them they look just like any other boxer briefs I have ever purchased before. I received the black ones, but they actually have a variety of colors. You will be able to pick and buy a color that matches most of your outfits or that you just like the most.

THEY’RE COMFORTABLE:

They informed me that when it came to fabric they wouldn’t settle for anything but the best, so the obvious choice was superfine merino wool. A far superior fabric to cotton or polyester, it’s soft, lightweight, breathable, warm in cold weather, cool in warm weather, quick drying and doesn’t hold odours. I’m no fabric person and can honestly not tell you the difference in that fabric and my other boxer brief underwear, but I will tell you that the fabric is very soft and fits around my body like a smooth glove. I walked around the house and even ran up the stairs and still felt comfortable. I also did the obvious you know put important things in the pockets and well even with them in the pockets they were comfortable. I will admit that when I put my passport in the pocket (yes it’s big enough to hold a passport) it took some getting used to. The good thing is I only carry my passport on me when I am crossing borders so it’s not that often and very bearable.

THEY’RE PRACTICAL:

When I purchase any travel item  that I will take with me on the road I think of it’s practicality. I want to make the item I am purchasing is an item I will actually use and will benefit me on the road. I believe that it is something most longterm travelers look into because every item we purchase is an item we will have carry around with us through out the entire trip. We all know how heavy our backpack gets when we are lost in a new city searching for our hostel/hotel and then on top of that we some times are praying that nothing is robbed from us as we carry our entire lives with us. With the Adventure Underwear you will be at ease, because your most important possessions will be literally next to well your I think you get it. Aside from that it’s practical in the way of you don’t have to remember to put it on. You will be able to wear these underwear anytime anywhere and the pockets will already be there ready for you to use. You can even go into the water with your important possessions and not have to worry about where you are going to leave them when you are at the beach. Basically you will be able to use these for more than just border crossings!!!

  1. I think its kind of funny that they developed these when a FEMALE friend had her camera stolen at the beach but they only have designs for men, lol.

They are stylish and I think men would love them. In fact my son is going to travel for a year in 2014 and I am going to get some for him

Thanks for the comment Sindy, I completely forgot to mention that they are working on some for female travelers too. Good catch!

They are very stylish indeed and think most men will like the style and how practical they really are compared to a money belt. It will be a great gift for your son!!! Where all is he going???

  2. Money belt can be very irritating when you wear it for a long time, especially in a hot weather. My passport and money were damp from the sweat and its great they introduce water proof pockets.

    • Jaime Davila says:

My thoughts EXACTLY Alex… this is a brilliant idea and I am happy someone is doing it for us travelers and well.

  3. Sounds like a fabulous idea.

  4. That is awesome! I always try to find a place for my valuables before getting in the water. I wonder how waterproof they really are. Like, could I surf with them and have no water get on my credit card and money? Very cool idea though.

Gabriel yes I have the same problem when I am at the beach and well this solves it. I didn’t write about the water proof part since I did not get a chance to try them underwater. They have the info on their sites and I’m sure if you have questions you can tweet them or email them.

  5. You can have any pair of pants or shorts with a money belt in them by sewing an inside pocket into them. If you aren’t that handy you can have a seamstress do it for super cheap, less than $5 almost anywhere, even cheaper in developing countries. Drop a waterproof pouch in it and bang all your problems are solved

  12. The death of the money belt INDEED! 🙂

  13. wouldnt theives know about these

    • Jaime Davila says:

Same could be said about the money belts… shouldn’t they know about those too? I think these are much safer. It’s going to be harder for a thieve to get all the way into your underwear.

  14. This is awesome. The waterproof bit is the best part abt this.
