Be a Local in Malaga.

If you really want to know what makes an area special, you’re going to have to go off the beaten path a bit. And nowhere is that more true than in Malaga, Spain. Instead of vacationing like a tourist in the city and the region of Costa Del Sol, get in touch with your adventurous side, and explore the area like local. Ditch the fanny pack, leave the sun visor at home, and take a look at these three things you have to do to get the most out of your visit .

Sardines in Malaga.

Try the Grilled Sardines

Sardines aren’t typically found on a dinner menu in America, but they’re an iconic dish in the south of Spain. In fact, Spanish Sabores listed it as one of their “3 Must Try Foods in Malaga.”

To get the freshest batch, head to the old fishing district of El Palo. There you’ll find rows of beachfront bars called chiringuitos, which cook the sardines in the traditional fashion. First, they spear a half dozen or so sardines with sharp, bamboo sticks. Then, the sticks are placed upright in the sand, next to hot, low-burning fires that grill the fish to perfection.

Best of all, British Airways notes that many attractions, including the beachfront chiringuitos, are generally open for the majority of the year, thanks to the area’s year-round warm temperatures. Nothing beats getting a basket of these local delicacies and soaking the warm sun with your favourite person and your favourite adult beverage.

Visit the Conception Botanical Garden

On the rare days when the weather doesn’t permit you to enjoy the outdoors in Malaga, head to the Conception Botanical Gardens, located just north of the city.

Established by Mr. and Mrs. Jorge Loring Oyarz√°bal, the gardens have served as an oasis among the bustling beaches and city streets for tourists and locals alike since 1855. Grab a spot in one of the many seating areas placed around the gardens and relax. Maybe you can read that book you brought on your trip, or you can simply take in the lush beauty of all the gorgeous surrounding plants and flowers.

Play a Round of Golf

The plethora of golf courses in Malaga and the surrounding area make it an ideal place for those looking to get on the greens while on vacation. According to Family Life in Spain, the area of Costa Del Sol is fondly known by golf enthusiasts as Costa Del Golf because it’s home to more than 70 courses, a few of which are among the best in Europe. So, Costa Del Golf may not be the most creative of names, but it’s certainly a well-deserved title.

Even if you’re not a big golfer, plenty of the resorts offer additional activities you can take advantage of. These include spa packages and exquisite shopping along with reservations to the finest restaurants in the area.

Malaga’s tourist spots are popular for a reason. The sparkling beaches of Costa Del Sol and historically rich museums are ones you shouldn’t miss. But your trip will be even more memorable if you add in some unique local spots. Next time you visit, find your inner explorer, and step outside of your comfort zone. You won’t regret it.
